The first project of the Ely Preservation Trust (founded 1979) was
20/22 St Mary's Street, Ely
The three cottages which had stood empty for some 8 years were acquired circa 1980.
Two of the cottages were eighteenth century with nineteenth century roof and fenestration and one possibly a former ‘hall house’ with nineteenth century roof and fenestration.
The Trust had had, in order to reach an agreement, accept the demolition of one of the unlisted cottages which had had a twentieth century shop front inserted.
The restoration scheme was completed in 1981 and opened by the local MP Clement Freud.
